PBS showcases rich diversity of Latin music with Musica Latina: In Performance at the White House

Performances by Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz and Others. Airing October 8th.





PBS presents Música Latina: In Performance at the White House, a television music special taped in the East Room of the White House. President and Mrs. Obama will host the concert event spotlighting an array of Latin music on Monday, September 16. The evening will feature artists Natalie Cole, Lila Downs, Gloria Estefan, Raul Malo, Ricky Martin, Prince Royce, Arturo Sandoval, Romeo Santos, Alejandro Sanz and Marco Antonio Solís. (Program subject to change.) The one-hour television special is part of the long-running In Performance at the White House series, now in its 36th year. The program will premiere Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 8 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings). 

Música Latina: In Performance at the White House will also be available on www.pbs.org/whitehouse beginning Wednesday, October 9. In addition, the program will be broadcast Sunday, October 13 on the American Forces Network to American service men and women and civilians at U.S. Department of Defense locations around the world. The concert, including President Obama's remarks, will be available for press via the White House Press Corps pool feed and streamed live on www.whitehouse.gov.

In addition to the evening concert, on the morning of the concert taping, the White House will host "Celebrando el Ritmo Latino: The History of Latin Music," an educational workshop held in the State Dining Room for 130 middle and high school students from the Washington, D.C., area. The event will be produced by The GRAMMY Museum and led by Robert Santelli, the museum's executive director. A leading musicologist and music educator, he will give the participating students an overview of the origins of Latin music, inform them of the elements of the genre, discuss how Latin music has been popularized in other parts of the world and examine the many subgenres that encompass the larger Latin genre. Santelli will be joined by special music guests, including Lila Downs, Romeo Santos and Marco Antonio Solís, who will share their experiences and answer student questions. The White House "Celebrando el Ritmo Latino: The History of Latin Music" workshop will be streamed live on www.whitehouse.gov/live.

Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kanye West open "The Jay Leno Show"

Jay Leno will welcome superstar Jay-Z who will perform with Rihanna and Kanye West when the trio of entertainers break the seal on Leno's new series in the premiere of "The Jay Leno Show" (Monday-Friday, 10-11 p.m. ET) as the new comedy series debuts on Monday, September 14.

Jay-Z with Rihanna and West will be the first to rock the program's brand new stage as they perform "Run This Town." The song is from Jay-Z's highly anticipated new album "The Blueprint 3," which will be available in stores and online on September 11.

Green Day and Pink set for 2009 MTV VMA's

MTV is taking over New York City and breaking down the walls as Green Day and P!nk are set to perform at the "2009 MTV Video Music Awards." Grammy Award winning rockers Green Day return to the VMAs stage to perform a hit off their latest album, 21st Century Breakdown. After an explosive performance at last year's show, P!nk is determined to top herself this time around with a song from her multi-platinum selling album Funhouse. In addition, Katy Perry, Ne-Yo and Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford are the first presenters confirmed for the show. As previously announced, Russell Brand will host and Taylor Swift and Muse are set to perform. The "2009 MTV Video Music Awards" will air live on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 9PM (Live ET/Tape delayed PT). Additional performers, nominees and presenters will be announced at a later date.

Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland perform on Miss Universe Pageant

Superstar artists Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland will perform at the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant. Billy Bush, co-anchor of "Access Hollywood" and Claudia Jordan of "Celebrity Apprentice" and "Deal or No Deal," will host the competition live from Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas on August 23rd at 9 PM ET on NBC and Telemundo.

BET Launches New Music Series

BET is launching a new music program titled "Grey Goose Entertainment and BET Present: Rising Icons." This new late-night series will profile eight of the world's most talented and gifted musicians. Premiering on Monday, July 27 at 10:30 pm (ET/PT) with Chrisette Michele, the half-hour series will not only showcase their musical skills, but take viewers on a personal journey into their world.

Additional "Rising Icons" featured throughout the series include Hal Linton, Keri Hilson, Kid Cudi, Melanie Fiona, Ryan Leslie, The Dream and Wale.

Sean Paul performs on "So You Think You Can Dance"

Next week, in the penultimate performance show airing Wednesday, July 29 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, the Top 6 dancers (Brandon Bryant, Evan Kasprzak, Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi, Kayla Radomski and Melissa Sandvig) will compete for a coveted spot in the finale.

The following night, Jamaican dancehall superstar Sean Paul will sing his new hit, "So Fine," and dance troupe JabbaWockeeZ will perform before America's Top 4 dancers are revealed on the live results show Thursday, July 30 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed)
